How to measure a garage door torsion spring

Using a Tape measure, measure the indside diameter of the spring.

Typical measurements for residential garage doors are are:

  • 1-3/4"
  • 2"
  • 2-1/4"(rare size, typically is converted to a 2" inside diameter for replacement)

Identify your spring using the photo to the left. The spring on the left is a left wound spring, the spring on the right is a right wound spring.

Measure the distance of 10 coils and divide by 10 (same can be done measuring 20 coils).

Start your measurement somewhere in the middle of the spring.

Example:

Distance of 10 coils = 2-1/4" = 2.25" ÷ 10 = .225 wire size
